Amoxicillin is broad- spectrum beta lactam antibiotic with a bactericidal action against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
The bactericidal action is due to inhibition of cell wall synthesis. Amoxicillin is mainly excreted in urine.
A major part can also be excreted in bile. Sulbactam is a beta lactamase inhibitor; it binds the beta lactamase enzymes and prevent the inactivity of the Amoxycillin. It has a mild bactericidal action also but is almost negligible.
The above combination produces a synergistic effect, hence provides a quick action on the bacteria as whole.
